This is an eco-friendly way of providing heat so as to grow both early and late crops so extending the season by several months.

The course will be on Friday 2nd of March 10am – 4pm at the Marley Stadium in Keighley and the cost will be £20. Drinks will be provided but bring a packed lunch. The course is very hands on, and outdoors – so weatherproof working clothes are the order of the day.

To book a place please phone Jack after 6pm on 01422 202648 to book a place, or contact him by email. It may be possible to hold another course if there is a big demand.

Bradford Council are undertaking a public consultation over the future of woodlands in the District, and they would like your input. Continue reading →

Woodlands For Our Future

The Council is the single largest woodland owner in the district with 590 hectares of woodland, 267 hectares of parkland woods and some 14,000 highway trees. These trees along with hundreds of hectares of private woodlands help to make the district sustainable and also a great place to live, work and visit.

They are currently working on a plan for the future of trees and woodland in the District, and they need your views and suggestions, to ensure that it meets the needs of all of the community. This is an opportunity for you to help shape the future of our local woodlands. Please spend a few minutes answering the questions and making suggestions.

A consultation document regarding a Draft Woodland Strategy has been produced, and the Woodlands Team welcome feedback in any form – letters, emails, phone calls. The most important thing is that they hear peoples’ views. The consultation finishes on 31st January 2012, after which the comments will be incorporated into a final draft which will be presented at The Environment Scrutiny Committee on 20th March. This is the place where the elected councillors adopt (or not) the strategy – the more responses the consultation receives the more information can be included in the action plan, but also it will indictate the level of support for woodlands in our District.

Kirklees Environment Partnership are hosting an all day event called ‘Growing Communities’ on Wednesday 23rd November. This day of free local food workshops and activities is organised in partnership with Stirley Community Farm, Growing Newsome and Information by Design.

In the morning there will be a series of workshops to inform, inspire and illustrate to you the ways that Newsome residents are growing. Together we have created a range of successful food growing projects, sites, events and education facilities. Our activities over the past two years have enabled local people to grow their own food, created volunteering opportunities, given people new skills and confidence, and helped to build new and stronger relationships.

Join us for these interactive workshops, a home grown lunch of local seasonal food, and a visit to Stirley Community Farm in the afternoon.
This day will be useful for anybody who is involved in education and training, policy making, and community or voluntary organisations who are interested in local food. Places are limited – please book now if you’d like to take part.
